Tech Tips: Are You Protected?
In these turbulent times, it’s important to minimize risk. The good news is that with proper precautions, your PC is one of the easier things to protect. Current anti-virus software is crucial, but there are a number of other steps that you can take to make it difficult for potential evildoers to harm your machine:
- Get antivirus protection with antispyware! It’s relatively inexpensive and an absolute must on any workstation connected to a network with Internet access. Keep your protection current; an expired account does you no good at all.
- Surf Smart! Using good judgment and avoiding questionable websites can save a lot of headaches. MySpace is a hotbed for virus distribution. And think twice before downloading a file from the Internet. Do you trust the source?
- Police Your Email! If you don’t recognize the sender, immediately delete the email without opening it. Even if you know the sender, think twice about opening any attachments. Turning off the preview pane is another way to lessen the chance of being infected by adware or spyware.
